2008 Hurricane Ike damage in Texas
Took these video clips in April 2009 driving west along the narrow Bolivar Peninsula on coastal Highway 87 from about Gilchrist to Point Bolivar, Texas in order to reach the ferry boat bay crossing to Galveston. On the morning of September 13, 2008, the eye of Hurricane Ike approached the Texas coast near Galveston Bay, making landfall at 2:10 a.m. CDT over the east end of Galveston Island. On Bolivar Peninsula dozens of people were rescued as flood waters exceeded 12 feet (3.7 m) above sea level in advance of the hurricane. The peninsula bore the brunt of Ike’s right-front quadrant, historically the worst part of a hurricane, and experienced catastrophic damage with the worst being between Rollover Pass and Gilchrist, Texas. Media estimates of lost homes exceed 80% and could top 95%. A large number of people who did not evacuate in advance of the storm remain unaccounted for.

kristin dahlgren reports that gas lines are around two hours long at the only gas station open in the beaumont, texas area. it could be more than a month before power is fully restored to beaumont.
the refineries at beaumont are not able to open now and some might not be able to open for at least a week.

jeff ranieri is at 306 beach drive, surfside beach, texas where he reports that 40 homes were destroyed; 50 damaged. mr. ranieri says that there has not been a block in surfside beach that has not been touched by hurricane ike.
